Pergolas

A pergola is a garden feature to form a shaded walkway, passageway or sitting area. It consists of vertical posts or pillars that usually support cross-beams and a sturdy open lattice, upon which vines can spread. As a type of gazebo, it can also form an extension to a building and serve as protection for an open terrace.

Pergolas may link pavilions or extend from building doorways to open garden features such as isolated terraces or swimming pools. Freestanding pergolas, those not attached to a home or structure, provide a recreation area that allows for breeze and light sun and offers protection from the harsh glare of direct sunlight. Pergolas also provide climbing plants with a structure on which to grow.
